MyGas for iPhone

Another useful app for the iPhone is ‘MyGas’ which is a database of Fuel Stations, showing you: 1) Gas Stations on a Map (c/o Google Maps) or 2) Nearby Gas Stations.
As the screenshot shows in the view of ‘Nearby Gas Stations’, it shows useful information giving:
Fuel Station Name
Cost of your chosen fuel (set up in perferences) and when the price was last updated.
To assist in the every growing list of stations, you can also add a new station, not already listed. The fuel prices can also be updated if you’d like to really be helpful!

iOS 4.2 is out!

Finally, the promised and MUCH anticipated iOS 4.2 software/firmware upgrade for Apple iPhones, iPad & iPod Touches has been released. It was out yesterday and brings the version up to 4.2.1. Be brave and prepared for a process which takes about 30 minutes; it’ll be worth it… so I hope, I’ll blog very soon about what all the fuss over the latest 4.2 upgrade has been about. Oh and iTunes had an upgrade too, now at v.10.1. Watch this blog…

iPhone voting app

As if our iPhone doesn’t do enough, they’re now bringing out an app that will enable you to vote from your iPhone for shows such as X Factor.
The Register have recently announced that Ofcom has said that voting apps will be approved, as long as viewers are warned about the cost. Also the app won’t be allowed to add features; such as it having an advert for a specific platform, something Nokia will have to take on board when it considers adding voting to its (Symbian) X Factor application.
A smartphone voting app is an obvious development, which would have arrived years ago if the premium-rate industry wasn’t still reeling from the scandals of a few years ago. Technically the process is trivial – all the popular platforms (including the iPhone, Android etc) can send an SMS from within an application, allowing the developer to present pictures of, say, The X Factor finalists and inviting viewers to tap on the face they’d like to vote for. A warning might pop up, but that’s a minor thing compared to the complexity of sending a specially-formatted text message, or sending a message to a finalist-specific number – something that’s beyond a surprising number of viewers! The development is a small one, but the impact will be great, and it will be interesting to see what difference it makes to future show results.

PayPal releases update to iPhone app

On the 4th November 2010, ‘The Register‘ announced that PayPal has submitted an updated iPhone app. PayPal have found that the previous version failed to check the digital certificates that confirmed the authenticity of the online-payment website. The security risk leaves iPhone users who rely on the app open to man-in-the-middle attacks when connecting over unsecured networks such as Wi-Fi hotspots! A day later, PayPal rushed out an updated version to the app store. The app for Android-based phones luckily wasn’t affected.

TV Guide

I personally don’t watch a lot of TV, often too busy doing other things. However, since I found this app, I’ve found it so useful and convienient when I did have some time to watch TV.

Forget having to hunt for that TV guide/magazine or disturbing a family members viewing whilst you want to pop up the TV guide to see what’s on television. Get a free copy of ‘TV Guide’ for your iPhone/iPod Touch, you won’t be dissapointed

Magnifier for iPhone

Well, there are programmers out there producing apps filling so many functions! So here’s another…. Magnifier Free for the iPhone is as the name suggests, a Magnifer; which uses the iPhones camera.

The app gives you three levels of magnification: 1x, 2x & 4x as the item is viewed on the screen of your iPhone. When the app’s used on an iPhone 4, it also features a nice little (on screen) on/off toggle switch to turn the LED flash on/off; useful if you’re magnifying something in a poorly lit area.

WCA (Analogue) Clock for iPhone

Having already got a nice add-on digital clock for my iPhone 4, the other day I was looking in the app store for an analogue clock and came across: WCA.
It’s a nice looking analogue clock with a good sized clock face with second hand, as shown in the screenshot. The app is free and also features the functionality of alarms.
Although there are many other analogue apps in the app store, this particular one took my fancy.
